Displacement amplitude scaling of a two-dimensional synthetic jet

چکیده
A two-dimensional synthetic jet is studied numerically by solving the incompressible, unsteady, Reynolds-averaged, Navier–Stokes equations and using a k-e turbulence model. Rather than a resonant cavity, the synthetic jet is supplied by a fully developed channel flow. Results for two exit geometries, a sharp exit and a rounded exit, and several dimensionless stroke lengths are compared. This study focuses on the effect of the displacement amplitude sstroke lengthd on the power required to form the jet, the net momentum flux downstream of the exit, the formation threshold, and the spatial development of the synthetic jet. It is shown that the channel flow development length, the self-similar region, and the region from which the jet draws fluid all scale on the stroke length. It is also demonstrated that the power required to form the jet increases with stroke length as does the resultant momentum flux. Finally, the power required to form a synthetic jet is significantly smaller for a rounded exit compared to a sharp-edged exit. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1872092g

Flow Characterization and Modeling of Strong Round Synthetic Jets in Crossflow
This study focuses on the flow field of a round synthetic jet issuing into a crossflow. Six cases are investigated in which the jet-to-freestream velocity ratios range between 2.8 and 8.3. This corresponds to a medium-to-strong transverse jet, which is characterized using both two-dimensional hot-wire anemometry and particle image velocimetry techniques. A self-similar model is developed for th...
متن کاملRelativistic Jet Response to Precession and Wave-Wave Interactions
Three dimensional numerical simulations of the response of a Lorentz factor 2.5 relativistic jet to precession at three different frequencies have been performed. Low, moderate and high precession frequencies have been chosen relative to the maximally unstable frequency predicted by a Kelvin-Helmholtz stability analysis. Transverse motion and velocity decreases as the precession frequency incre...
متن کاملHeat Transfer under Double Turbulent Pulsating Jets Impinging on a Flat Surface
In this study, the numerical analysis of turbulent flow and heat transfer of double pulsating impinging jets on a flat surface has been investigated. The unsteady two-dimensional numerical solution for two similar and dissimilar jets was performed using the RNG k-ε model. The results showed that the RNG k-ε model has more satisfactory predictions of the Nusselt number distribution. Comparisons ...
متن کاملInvestigation of flow and heat transfer of nanofluid in a diverging sinusoidal channel
Using of nanofluids and ducts with corrugated walls are both supposed to enhance heat transfer, by increasing the heat transfer fluid conductivity and the heat transfer area respectively. Use of a diverging duct with a jet at inlet section may further increase heat transfer by creating recirculation zones inside the duct. In this work two-dimensional incompressible laminar flow of a nanofluid e...
